White Out

Our parents most likely cringe at the thought of white pants, shoes and dresses worn before Memorial Day...but Generation Y fashion lovers are pretty torn on the issue. I have friends who strictly stick to the no white before Memorial Day rule, and others who don't even know the rule exists. Personally, I think it is all contextual. A bright white dress worn on a rainy April day is clearly inappropriate, but a pair of white Keds or a white tank top before Memorial Day doesn't bother me one bit. As long as the outfit is tactful and weather appropriate, I say white before Memorial Day is a go. Rules have to be broken every now and then, and besides, who made that rule anyway? Probably someone who didn't look good in white. I think it's a little outdated, especially for people who live in warm climates!

What do you think?

Picnic Time!

I love Memorial Day weekend for one simple and blissful reason: It is the true marker of the beginning of summer. The weather is almost always beautiful, there are plenty of picnics and everybody has Monday off  from work to spend the day eating, drinking and catching rays. There is no better time to break out your favorite summer pieces than on Memorial Day.

Here are some affordable essentials...

A Brilliant Solution

I have always struggled with the concept of whether or not black and brown should be mixed together in an ensemble. Depending on the shade of brown, I sometimes think it is a classy and chic combination. Other times, it looks totally wrong. I am starting my summer internship next week, and while in Florida, I searched for a bag that was large and professional enough to carry my laptop in to work. I was really hoping to find a two toned black and brown bag so that it could be versatile and pair with any outfit, but my selection was small considering almost every bag I liked was over 200 dollars (wayyyy beyond this unpaid intern’s budget.) I finally found an affordable, professional and large enough bag, but it is completely black. I started worrying and brainstorming about what I would do on days when I was wearing brown shoes, and my ever-more-creative-than-I-am-mom came up with a brilliant solution. She suggested that I tie a brown silk scarf on my bag when I’m wearing brown. So, I headed to COACH and found the perfect scarf to transform my all black bag into a versatile accessory. For all of you readers on a budget, this is the perfect way to make one bag adaptable.

What do you guys think of the combination of black and brown?

Sticker Nails?

I was flipping through the pages of In Style magazine when I saw the advertisement for Sally Hansen nail strips. For those of you who haven’t heard of them, they are basically colored stickers for your nails that look like a fresh manicure. They appear to be great in the picture, but I am very curious to see how they actually look. I’m pretty skeptical and envision my nails looking like a kindergartener’s all decked out in bright Lisa Frank stickers. However, I am pretty willing to try them since I have never been able to “color within the lines” and manicures aren’t exactly a top priority on my budget list.

Has anyone used these strips yet? How are they?

Home Again!

My trip to Florida was beyond relaxing and enjoyable. I got plenty of sun (or too much, according to my grandma,) had many delicious meals and got to do some shopping. Actually, I did a little too much shopping, as I had to ship some of my purchases home that didn't fit in my suitcase. Woops! Now, it’s back to reality and only one and a half weeks away from my move to New York and the start of my internship. I have much to do in the upcoming week to prepare.

Does anyone have any suggestions of affordable gyms in the Westchester area?

The Sunshine State

Today I am leaving for Florida to visit my grandma and University of Miami Law School. I'm looking forward to spending the week with my mom and my grandma and, of course, I'm excited to catch some rays by the pool! It's my last hoorah before a very busy summer kicks in.

Bojangles

One accessory that I cannot seem to get enough of lately is bracelets. The chunkier they are and the more noise they make, the better. I like them stacked, and I like them in a variety of colors and metals. One set of bangles or one thick band can really top off an outfit and make all the difference between a simple look and a well accessorized ensemble. I have been gravitating towards the jewelry section in stores lately just so I can check out the bracelet selection. Often times, the ones I like most cost much more than I am willing to spend for costume jewelry. So, I sought out to find some bracelets at a variety of price points.

The Brightest

Summer isn't dreary, and your outfits shouldn't be either. The little black dress is perfect for winter outings, but summer requires something a little more upbeat and festive. It is the perfect time to capitalize on the brightest pieces a store has to offer, not only because you're tan enough to pull it off, but also because the colors match the joyous mood of the season. Put simply, no one wants to see somebody in an all black ensemble walking along the beach.

here are some affordable brights to bring in the season...

The Ultimate Feminist

One thing I love about summer is the opportunity it presents to dress as girly as possible. Feminine patterns, colors and accessories remind me of sunshine, summer concerts and pool parties. There is no better time to embrace lace and florals than when it's warm and the days are long.  If you're worried about looking too youthful or feminine, try pairing your girly pieces with chunky jewelry, dark shades and denim. Here are some affordable options to add a little girliness to your wardrobe.

Summer Stress?

It doesn't seem right, but sometimes summer is more stressful to me than the school year. The thought of having to balance an unpaid internship, a paid job, a summer class, blogging, applying to graduate schools, studying for the LSATS/GRE's, preparing my honors thesis institutional review board application, and actually having a life is daunting. I just have to keep reminding myself that I have 3 and a half months to complete these tasks, and there will be plenty of fun along the way. Sometimes I need a solid reminder to help me think of all the good summer brings, and these images (some from online and some taken by me) definitely inspire me to get excited for the beach, sunglasses, wedges, concerts and sunshine.

Adorableness

For anyone who hasn't seen this YouTube video yet, I thought I'd post it here because it is quite possibly the most adorable thing I have ever seen. And it was captured by accident.

Summer Lovin'

It's official. I'm on "summer" vacation (if you count rainy, 50 degrees weather as summer.) I must say that the only thing worse than studying for finals is packing up your apartment, carrying everything to your car for hours, then carrying everything from your car to your house, only to realize that you have absolutely no room at home for anything (whyyyy do I have so much stuff?) It is taking me hours to unpack, and I'm just going to have to pack right back up in three weeks when I move to New York for the summer. If I wasn't so OCD about my room, I would leave everything packed up in boxes. Summer shouldn't be this stressful!

Either I need a bigger closet, or I need to get rid of some stuff. What do ya think??
(photo quality isn't great because I had to take it with my phone since my camera is dead, and it would be a miracle to find my charger amongst all of this stuff.)

I'd sure love to have this closet that Jen at MadeByGirl has...
